SCENIC and COSTUME DESIGN for
THE 2024 OFF BROADWAY WORLD PREMIERE in NY at the FLEA THEATER
“YOU ARE NOT CONTENT! YOU ARE A HUMAN BEING!”
WRITTEN BY GAGE TARLTON
DIRECTED BY GABI CARRUBBA
SETS AND COSTUMES BY JOSH OBERLANDER
LIGHTS and VIDEO BY ZACK LOBEL
SOUND BY EMMA HASSELBACH
Pretty Perfect Lives was a speculative-fiction play about identity, obsession, sexual
exploration, internet addiction, and the dangers of turning life into content. The relationship of lifestyle influencer couple Tiffany and Tucker is put to the ultimate test when they are selected to join the Internet Reality Simulation-Project (IRS-P): a new digital
program that allows you to travel through different versions of your life via augmented reality.
The space sought to tell the story of a sleek apartment meets scienctific examination chamber while supporting the high-speed rhymthm of the piece. The clothes references a variety of contemporary internet tropes while telling a story of how Jesse, the gen z third, disrupts everything the perfect, heteronormative Tiffany and Tucker (dressed in solid pink and blue) know about their roles.
“...a sleekly versatile set by Josh Oberlander, which provides an ideal surface for Zack Lobel’s hilarious video projections, which further expand this universe of digital make-believe. Oberlander’s perfectly selected costumes offer strong first impressions of each character, which adds to our disorientation as Tarlton scrambles the narrative.” - Zachary Stewart for THEATERMANIA
