SHADOW OF A GUNMAN (1920) by Sean O’Casey is set in a Dublin tenement house during the Irish War for Independence, and is about the lives of the people who live there, caught in the crossfire. While our production is set in the 20’s, we strove for a timeless feel using all salvaged plywood, and architectural details that reference the Troubles of the 1970’s as well, to create a space that is about how sectarian violence not only echoes throughout Ireland’s history but also relates to the outbursts of ideological violence in America today. The claustrophobic space shows many people living their lives under cramped conditions that are resonant with the housing crises of then and now, in both Dublin and New York, in order to create a space that is a powder keg ready to explode.
